How much will it cost? Investment in family legacy depends on the scope of the project. Many factors are considered, including length of interviews, the amount of research involved, the number of photographs or other documents to be scanned, the quality of the completed product that includes various printing options. We focus your goals and vision, and I will provide a detailed estimate. If you have an idea of your budget, I will tailor a project accordingly. Gift certificates are available if several family members wish to contribute to a life story project.
How long will it take to complete? Again, that depends on the scope of the project. The duration is typically from a few weeks to several months. Some, such as complete life stories or family histories involving research, can require up to a year in preparation and printing. We estimate that for each hour of interview there follows approximately 8-10 hours of additional work in transcription, editing, scanning, layout and design, working with the publisher, etc. Research involves additional time. Every project is unique and will be tailored to your specific requirements. I am conscientious to work within an agreed-upon timeline.
My life isn't very interesting. Why should I record my story? Your descendents want to know your passions, views, loves, sorrows and victories. Within them are examples to live by. They will be grateful to simply know your thoughts as you sit on your porch looking out over the apple trees on a summer day. There is nothing too commonplace that is not of value to those who follow. Imagine you are reaching into the future and having a conversation with a great-grandchild, not yet born. You are worth knowing. There is no better way than telling your story.
What if I have trouble remembering? I am experienced to interact and question with sensitivity. This process, together with an historical knowledge of the times in which you've lived, will often trigger long-forgotten experiences. You will be surprised how much can be recalled. You may touch memories you haven't visited in decades.
My memory jumps around a lot, different events and people spanning across the decades of my life all within a few minutes. Won't this make a confusing story? This is the work of a skilled editor. Your job is to simply tell the stories. I will craft the narrative into a book that is a pleasure to read, either through a chronological format or grouped by themes, whatever is best suited to your story.
What if I say things I decide I don't want to include in the book? Those decisions are yours. You can delete anything you are uncomfortable with. Remember, this is your story.
