Our first step is a complimentary consultation where we get acquainted and discuss the options for your life-story project.*  Whether you wish to record the stories that span your entire life or focus on specific periods or experiences, we will customize the project to reflect your vision, hopes and budget.

I will provide a written proposal of the costs and a timeline for the project.  Once we agree on the details, we are ready to begin.

At the heart of any life-story project is a series of relaxed interviews.   These are recorded in the comfort of your home or a quiet place of your choosing.  Generally, we meet for two-hour sessions over a period of several days or at a pace that is comfortable for you.   These conversations unfold naturally, without concern for the chronological sequence or the final presentation of the material.  As an engaged and curious listener, I gently guide you to your stories, helping you draw forth the experiences of your past.  You are free to include or exclude any details as you choose.  The focus is your story according to your wishes.

Following the interviews, I transcribe the recordings and then carefully edit and organize this into a readable, smooth-flowing narrative that retains the integrity of your storytelling style and voice.

I provide a draft of the manuscript for your review.  At this time, you can add details, check for accuracy, or delete information.  If new stories are inspired, these may be added as well.

If you’ve requested historical research to supplement your story, this will be presented as well.  I can research newspaper archives, immigration records, passenger lists, birth notices, etc. You choose the details you wish to include.

Next, I offer help selecting photographs and other memorabilia (newspaper articles, journal pages, letters, family trees).  These items are scanned and the originals returned to you. I will consult with you on the layout and design and final form of the book.  There are many options for the binding and cover material: paperback, hardbound, or elegant leather-bound books with slipcovers.  All choices offer archival-quality acid-free paper to ensure that your life-story book will last for generations.

Upon your final approval, I send the manuscript to the printer.  You choose to print one or as many copies as you would like for your family and friends. If you choose, I will help coordinate a book-signing gathering to celebrate the completion of your life story book.
